House style

House Style
house style is the way a magazine designs and lays out their products . this links to the magazine's brand and is used to set out a recognizable style for the magazine . Features of a house style can include the magazine's color scheme, masthead and maybe even a logo . By using the same layout and design , it makes their product more recognizable and also looks more professional and consistent .

These magazines have quite a varied house style . the mastheads appear to shift between two variations  , either the "EM" logo or the plain text saying " electronic MUSICIAN" . These mastheads also vary in color , the only exception being that the E in EM is always white , while the other letter is usually in a different and bright color.  The color scheme on the 2nd mastheads.

the reason for doing this is to get a general idea of what the magazine genre is about and what its usual features are . By doing this , it will help my magazine seem more genuine and official which should in turn achieve higher marks.

magazine treatment

this is a basic checklist of the features of my magazine . this will help keep everything in check and provide a sort of to do list for my final production.

My masthead designs

the font i will use for my masthead will be the bottom font , however , the title will instead be "Derezz" instead of "Synth"  as i feel the name fits in more with the electronic music theme of the magazine . the colour scheme of the mastheads will primarily be monochrome , but with an edge of colour or the outline of the text will be in colour . these will be in a neon colour to fit in with the 80s electro theme .

Key concepts of NME magazine

The institution that produces NME magazine is called Time inc , which is owned by Time Warner. Which was formed by the merger of Time inc and Warner communications in 1990. The audience of NME is quite a broad one , NME typically covered indie rock artists but recently has branched more into the pop genre . By looking at this , the assumption can be made that the target audience of the magazine is around the area of 16-25 year olds . this is because the artists reported about in the magazines tailor to that target audience . Representation is also a key concept in these magazines . in the sense that each magazine will represent an artist in their own way . For example , if reporting on an a certain artist gains the magazine more readers/population then they will represent him/her in a more positive way to further increase the magazine's popularity and in turn profit . They will also try to feature said artist more frequently if they increase their sales. Magazines can also go against typical representations in order to gain more attention . For example , if an article was written about an unpopular/disliked artist displaying them in a more likable and positive manor , this could be seen as more unique and more interesting as it is offering a new representation and perspective on a topic.

My magazine analysis

my magazine goes against one of the typical conventions of a magazine by what is used as the main cover . the main cover image features a background , which is very uncommon as the majority of cover images are either on a blank background or an artificial/edited background. for my masthead , i used a plain , while professional black font . this was on the far lighter section of the magazine so it would stand out a lot more , thus catching the audience's attention . The color scheme i used was the school's colors . i used this because it would help make the magazine more easily identifiable with the school . for my anchorage text , i added a shadow to the text to help make it look more natural in line with the cover image. the anchorage is white so that it stands out more.my magazine conforms to the convention of a typical magazine as the layout is quite similar to that of a normal magazine . the masthead is at the top of the page in order to catch the potential buyer's eye. my banner features the school motto , again to make it more recognizable. i also tried to make my magazine suitable to my target audience so i created the cover in a way that was most appealing to that audience. as the target audience was 12-17 year olds , i chose to go for a more mature and professional design as i thought if i used a more fun design people would be discouraged as the magazine could appear  childish . my magazine also conforms to most conventions of a modern magazine , and includes their typical features . such as a masthead , main image , anchorage and cover lines etc

Lesson 2

Created with flickr slideshow.

So far i have learnt how to use different angles and shot types to help enhance the pictures i take . examples of these shot types are long shots , medium shots , close ups and extreme close ups. these help to either focus on one thing or display as much of the surroundings as possible.  i have also learnt how to use lighting in my photos , to make give pictures more exposure or more shadows etc . I have also learnt how to use focus in my photos to create depth of field

The first masthead is designed to fit the theme of school. So the letters are made with school equipment , suck as protractors , brushes and paint pallets.

The second masthead is aiming for the younger children at the school . The text is in the school colors , and is also styled in a more friendly , bubble writing font . there is also the cover line which is the school's logo.

The third masthead is a far simpler masthead . In this case it is the magazine's details inside the Plantsbrook logo . It uses a bold font , in the school colours , and elements of the actual school logo within too .

School magazine masthead analysis

the first two mastheads are very clear and very bold. this makes them look very professional for a magazine . the colors on them are a contrast of bright and dark which makes them quite eye catching . the 3rd magazine has quite an informal text which makes it look fun and appealing to its target audience . the target audience being school children and their parents . the first masthead seems to be tailored more to college students , as its writing is in a varsity font .

today i used several of the blog tools and experimented with them .

4 shared
4 shared is a great site to store data for free . I used it several years ago on my old blackberry to download music . On the computer it is far better . It allows you to store  up to 10GB of data on the cloud , which is very useful for storing any files (such as pictures and videos) so i don't use all my school computer's memory . and as its stored on the cloud so i  can use the files from anywhere with an internet connection.

Photobucket is a site used to upload and share videos for free . This is useful for storing any image and video files i will need or could ever need in my work . I can use the site to upload them , and then download them from any device i need . This helps because i can get all my pictures and video as home , without the need of a USB. essentially , by using photobucket , I can lave all of my stuff there and collect it when needed from whatever device i need them on .

Google calendar is an app that i use regularly on my phone in substitution of the default apple calendar app . I find it far more user friendly , as you can personalize all of the events i set on there. It's especially useful for setting homework deadlines as i will be alerted to do them or when they're due on my phone . the app also works in sync with my Google account , so i can sync all my contacts on my account/on my phone to set up events and reminders on both the site and the app . overall , a very useful app which is both attractive on the eye and very user friendly .

TubeChop is just so helpful . its perfect for editing clips into just the right part you want ! which is brilliant for adding tiny clips into work etc . it is also good for any presentations you want to add a clip into , such as to make a point , share some information , or deliver a punchline to a very poor joke

Thursday 17 September 2015

  •  the masthead on all of these magazines is always at the top of the magazine cover.
  • the font is always large so that it catches the attention of the reader , making them look at the rest of the cover. it also makes the brand name more visible.
  • the anchorage always has eye catching words again to lure the reader or potential buyer in . words like " EXCLUSIVE" or "WORLD EXCLUSIVE"
  • the magazine color scheme often matches the artist to look more complimenting to the artist on the front cover. For example , the Daft Punk cover features a pulp noir colour scheme to suit their electro style of music.
  • these magazines also use the names of popular celebrities at the time of publishing to attract readers who crave the latest news on the currently most popular artists . this is often included in a list beginning with " PLUS"  in bold text to be more eye catching

this is also used with who ever is on the front page of the magazine . this will almost always be the most popular artist at the time so potential buyers will easily recognize the person on the cover and buy .

the front page artist will almost always take centre stage on the cover . They will always be the focus of the cover . this is sometimes accompanied by the way they can sometimes block out certain texts on the cover . sometimes even block the magazine's masthead .

the more recent magazines will frequently have quite plain covers . this makes them more appealing to the eye and gives them a far more sleek and stylish feel.
